 Ken: Thanks for the explanation. The crashes might be something else then.
 I'm still waiting for it to die again and give me a back trace.

 It's weird the resident size is so large, though, but maybe the kernel
 just doesn't want to let go of the mmap'ed file. I've tried using a bucket
 load of memory in another process, but it doesn't seem to help. Oh well.
 I'll open another bug if I get a back trace. It bugs me why Varnish is
 being scaled with threads but that's another story.
