 It's not quite clear if this is varnish or platform malloc.

 It would be valuable if you could try to use the JEMALLOC allocator as a
 test:

 http://www.canonware.com/~ttt/2008/08/stand-alone-jemalloc-for-linux.html

 And see if that has different behaviour.

 You may also see better performance, jemalloc is king of the hill in
 malloc implementations right now as far as I know.
